Pondie, or Pondalowie Bay, is a surf spot that’s pretty well-known among locals. It’s a decent choice when there are strong south to east winds and the surf is up. The area features a mix of sand-covered reefs, which can create some fun waves, especially during the low to mid tide. Just keep in mind that for the best results, you’ll need some west in the swell to get things happening properly. The right-hand waves can actually hold their size, and there's also a spot called Richards a bit further up the beach that’s worth checking out.
The swell at Pondie can come from the southwest or west, and it handles sizes around 2ft (about 0.6 meters). You’ll find that the waves break over uneven reef and sand, providing both beach breaks and some decent left and right options. The spot is really best for intermediate surfers. To maximize your session, aim for those east winds and hit it during low or mid tide for the best conditions.
Be aware that the area can get a bit rippy, so keeping your wits about you is a good idea. The shorebreak can also be pretty tricky and could snap your board if you’re not careful. On the bright side, there’s an eco-friendly campsite nearby where you might spot some kangaroos and emus roaming around, adding a bit of local flavor to your surf trip.
