Chinamans surf guide

Chinamans is a well-known surf spot located in South Australia, recognized for its challenging conditions. It's primarily suited for advanced surfers due to its tricky setups and crowded take-off zones. The spot can get busy, so be prepared to share the waves. Generally, it offers an intense surfing experience, so you'll want to bring your A-game.

The waves at Chinamans break over uneven reef, with the best conditions coming from a South to SouthWest swell direction. It can handle swell sizes starting around 2ft (about 0.6 meters) and offers both left and right waves, although the lefts are more dominant. The drops can be pretty vertical, making it essential for surfers to be on their toes. NorthWest winds are ideal here, and the best times to surf are during low to mid tides. Just keep in mind this spot is definitely meant for expert surfers only; it can be quite challenging, especially when the waves get pumping.

For those who are still building their skills, Baby Chinamans is located east of the main break and provides a softer alternative. This spot also works well during lower tides and with favorable wind directions. If you’re not quite ready for the intense experience of the main break, heading over to Baby’s is a better option.
