Ponta Delgada is a surf spot that has seen better days. A seawall built for a nearby saltwater swimming pool has changed the dynamic here, burying what used to be an amazing point break. Locals say that the outside section can still break under the right conditions, but those long, thrilling rides are pretty much history.
The wave at Ponta Delgada generally works best with a west swell and can handle sizes up to about 2.4 meters (8 feet). While it can break both left and right, the lefts are what most surfers come looking for. The best wind for this spot comes from the southwest, and it tends to perform better during low to mid tide. Keep in mind, this spot is suited for expert surfers due to its challenging nature and inconsistent conditions.
When you're heading out, remember that the wave breaks over boulders, which can be a bit tricky. Even though the conditions have changed, if you catch it right, you might still find some fun waves to ride. Just make sure to check the swell direction—west is optimal, but it can also work with northeast swells.
