Ponta do Tristão is a surf spot located near Porto Moniz, recognized for its tricky access and relatively rare surf days. It’s not a crowded spot, which can be a plus for those looking to get away from the usual surf scene. The spot was first ridden by surfers Angus Opie, Magnus Murray, and Will Henry, adding a bit of history to this lesser-known break.
The surfing here can be quite intense, often deemed suitable only for expert surfers. Ponta do Tristão usually handles swell sizes around 5ft (1.5m), and it works best with a swell coming from the west, but it can also pick up north-west swells. The waves break over a rocky ledge and typically roll left, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. Conditions can get fast and challenging to make, so having the right swell direction is key to scoring a good session. A south-east wind can help clean things up, and this spot can work across all tide heights—low, mid, or high.
To get there, you’ll need to walk north from Porto Moniz, then paddle out in the channel all the way to the west end of the point. Just be ready for a long paddle, as the access is part of the adventure at Ponta do Tristão. Don't forget to check the swell forecast before you head out, as getting the right conditions here can make all the difference!
