Ponta Negra is a popular surf spot located along a long, straight beach that stretches past a lagoon system. This area attracts surfers looking for a decent wave and is usually less crowded during weekdays, making it a comfy spot to catch some surf.
The surf here can be pretty varied, with the best conditions coming from E-SE swells. These swells can deliver powerful beach breaks, but don’t get your hopes too high—much of the time, waves may come in messy and can close out quickly. The spot handles swell sizes from 0.3 meters (1ft) and breaks over sand, offering both left and right waves. If you’re a beginner, it’s a great place to practice since it typically handles low, mid, and high tides well, especially with a light east wind.
Although it can get a bit crowded on weekends, there's usually plenty of room for everyone to spread out. Ponta Negra is also a nice spot if you’re just looking to have a chill day at the beach while keeping an eye on the surf. Just remember to be patient with the waves, as conditions can change throughout the day.
