More about Port Denison surfspot

Outside the long breakwall, a decent left wall will rumble across the extensive limestone shelf in S-W swells and NE to SE winds. Solid turns and the occasional curtain are on offer, but it's accessible to intermediates looking for a bit of grunt without the scare factor. Holds size and gives a long ride on good days.

Long walk out over the spiky reef. Currents and a few crowds when on. The crayfish boats head out to the Houtman Abrolhos from here and Geraldton with many a surfer onboard hoping to catch one of the fickle reefs in a good mood, particularly Supertubes, a shallow spinning righthander. There are all sorts of reefs and aspects offering some flexibility for wind and swell direction, but it generally needs winter pulses to get going. Boat charter, sea plane and helicopter are the expensive options to get out to this unspoilt wilderness, but unless you have an experienced guide who knows the breaks. The fishing and diving is world-class, helping to perpetuate the stories of legions of large white, tiger, bronze whaler and reef sharks cruising the reef fringes.
