Hell's Gate is a surf spot located near Geraldton, known for its powerful waves and challenging conditions. It sits about 1 kilometer off the coast, right in front of the Point Moore lighthouse. This area is popular among local surfers, many of whom are also involved in the local fishing scene. The spot can be quite demanding, and it's not for the faint-hearted.
The wave at Hell's Gate is a right-hander that breaks over an uneven reef. It works best with a southwesterly swell, but can handle swells from the south and west as well. The ideal size for the waves is around 6 feet (about 1.8 meters), making it suitable for those with solid skills. The best wind direction is from the east, and it’s rideable at all tide heights, but it’s particularly fun during low to mid tides. Given its intensity, the spot is recommended for expert surfers only.
While Hell's Gate offers some exciting rides, it's important to be aware of your surroundings. There are strong currents and a local crowd that can be protective. Also, just inside the point is Explosives, a shorter left that attracts bodyboarders, especially when the southerly winds kick in during the afternoon. If you’re planning a session here, be prepared for the challenges it may present.
