Pulpos is a wide-open beachbreak located off the Pan Am Hwy, known for catching swell from both the south and the northwest. It's accessible via a signposted route, but keep in mind that parking is mainly for residents, which can make getting there a bit tricky. The beach offers a mix of sands, and while it can produce some fun waves, it also has its challenges.
The surf at Pulpos can be steep and fast, with the potential for barrels that are great for those who like to hit lips as the waves close out. It works best when the swell is around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can handle sizes from both the south and northwest. The waves break both left and right, making it a suitable spot for intermediate surfers. Ideally, you'll want to catch it with a northeast wind and at low to mid to high tides for the best session.
While Pulpos has its perks, there are better waves up north towards Arica. You might find that the peaks often line up better for rides going to the right, which can be a nice option if you’re looking to switch it up from the usual. Just be careful of the strong rips that can appear in the area, as they can add to the difficulty of the surf.
