Overview
Punta Burica is a super-exposed stretch of coast where large peaks break over many different offshore reefs, in an area that remains largely unexplored. Getting to the waves probably means organising a sturdy panga, so this is not a spot you stumble onto casually. The reefs are uneven, with sand mixed in, and they throw both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The point pulls in swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, and southwest is the direction that lines it up best. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, which leaves plenty of room for the bigger peaks the exposure is known for. Consistency is good, so when a swell is running there is a real chance of finding something.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean up the peaks. Low and mid tide are the windows to aim for, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert territory. Big peaks over uneven reef, scattered across a remote and barely mapped area, ask for experience and good judgement. The upside is space: the lineup stays fairly quiet.
Access
Road access is easier from the Panama side. There is camping nearby, and parking is free, though it is roadside and restricted.
