Punta Rocas surf guide

Punta Rocas is a well-known surf spot located in Peru, famous for its consistency and quality waves. This surf break attracts a lot of surfers, which means you can expect to see crowds, especially during the more manageable swell days. The spot is essentially a peak off a blunt headland and can handle a range of swell sizes, making it a popular choice for many. The environment is clean, and access to the spot is pretty straightforward.

The surf here varies significantly depending on the swell size and direction. It works best on south to southwest swells, handling sizes from around 1 meter (3 feet) to over 4.5 meters (15 feet). You can catch both lefts and rights on this reef break, with the rights being the more favored option. The waves can be thick and powerful, with some sections being hollow, especially at higher tides. The paddle-out is medium difficulty, and while regular surfers will find it fun, intermediates should be cautious due to the sometimes challenging conditions and the rocky bottom.

When it comes to wind conditions, east winds are preferable, while the northeast wind can ruin the fun. Tides play a role as well, with the spot working best at lower to mid tide, though it can be surfed at high tide too. Overall, it’s a good spot for shortboards and guns, but remember to keep an eye out for rocks and other hazards in the water. Given its popularity, it’s best to arrive early to avoid the crowd, especially on smaller days when everyone is out to enjoy the waves.
