Raupo Bay is a bit of a hidden gem located away from the more crowded surf spots near Christchurch. Itβs known for its wild, unspoilt environment, which makes it a great escape for those looking to enjoy some time in the water. The walk to get there is long, but that helps to keep the number of surfers low, so you can usually find some peace and quiet while you ride the waves.
This spot tends to pick up more southern swells compared to the Christchurch beaches, making it a good option when others aren't working. The waves here usually come in at around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and break over soft sand, creating some decent peaks on both the left and right. Little Raupo offers some protection from the north winds, but anything with a westerly direction can go offshore. For the best conditions, you're looking at low to mid tide, with northwest winds being ideal.
Raupo Bay is beginner-friendly, offering a chance for newer surfers to practice without the pressure of a crowded lineup. With the right swell, it can be a fun and enjoyable place to work on your skills while soaking up the beautiful natural surroundings.
