Ruggles surf guide

Ruggles is a surf spot located at the end of Ruggles Ave in Newport, Rhode Island. It sits along a rocky coastline with a series of reefs that form a point break. The area is known for its beautiful surroundings, including the historic Newport Mansions that line the coast. While Ruggles can produce some good waves during the right swells, it doesn't always deliver, especially when conditions aren't ideal. Parking can be tricky in this popular tourist area, so it's best to arrive early or look for side streets.

The surf at Ruggles generally rolls in as right-hand point breaks, particularly on solid south to southeast swells. The waves can reach anywhere from 2 meters to over 4.5 meters (6 to 15 feet), and mid tide is usually the best time to hit the water. Wind from the northwest works well here, and the bottom is mostly rocky. Expect a lot of paddling, especially when the swells are up. It's not a place for beginners, as the surf can be challenging and requires expert-level skills to navigate properly.

Ruggles typically sees heavy crowds during the summer and fall, with a moderate vibe among locals. The best time to surf is mainly during autumn and winter, when conditions are more favorable. While the wave isn't hollow, it allows for some good carving, making it a fun but demanding spot. Just remember to keep an eye on the rocks, and be ready for some action when the swell is in!
