Sandy Beach - Puerto Rico surf guide

Sandy Beach in Puerto Rico is a popular surf spot known for its beautiful scenery and a bit of a fickle surf. It features a mix of reef and sand breaks. The main peak is a good left that breaks off the rocks, but there are also some beach breaks in the area that can cater to beginners and those looking to improve their skills. The vibe here is generally chill, but locals know the spot well, so keep that in mind when you paddle out.

This place can handle swell sizes from about 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 10 feet (3 meters) and works best with northwest, north, and northeast swells. The waves generally break over uneven reef and sand, giving you a mix of beach and reef breaks. The ideal wind is from the southeast, and while lower tides are usually better, it can work at mid and high tides too. Sandy Beach typically offers predominantly left waves, but you might catch a right if you're lucky. The surf is at its best early in the morning before the trade winds pick up, although south wind days can be good as well.

Access to the spot is fairly simple with some parking available off Route 413. Just note that after rain, the environment can be a bit messy, so it's good to keep that in mind. The crowd factor can vary depending on the wind conditions, so you might find it more crowded when things are lining up right. It's worth checking the conditions before heading out, especially during late summer and fall for tropical cyclone swells, and in late fall through early spring for more consistent surf.
