Solimar Reef and Beach surf guide

Solimar Reef and Beach is a surf spot located along the Solimar community. Accessible by walking paths on either end, it offers parking in a dirt area to the south or along the road. The environment here can be manageable, but sometimes a bit rough, especially after it rains. Overall, itโ€™s a place that balances a mellow vibe with some decent surf options.

The surf at Solimar features a fast, ledgy, two-way peak that breaks around 300 yards (about 274 meters) offshore during big winter swells. It generally handles swell sizes from 3 feet (about 0.9 meters) to 10 feet (about 3 meters). While it can throw down some solid waves, it usually doesn't go above double-overhead. Keep in mind the kelp can be thick at the start of winter swells, making for a challenging experience. The Reef is best with south swells and low to medium-high tides. For those looking for easier rides, there's Solimar Point nearby with a decent left on SW swells and medium-high tides, though the waves can be mushy in winter. Inside the Point, the beachbreak adds another option, especially during good windswell. You can ride various types of boards here, including shortboards, funboards, and longboards, which makes it suitable for different surfing styles and abilities, including beginners.

When it comes to crowds, Solimar usually has a light to moderate crowd factor, so you're likely to find space to surf. The preferred wind direction is northeast, which can enhance the surf experience. Just be warned, getting dumped on the outside reef is a hazard when the waves are big. Solimar Surf is rideable year-round, making it a versatile option for surfers of all levels.
