Ventura Overhead/Emma Wood State Beach is a popular surf spot located along the California coast. It features two main breaks: the outer reef break known as Ventura Overhead, which is about a quarter-mile offshore, and the inside beach break/reef setup at Emma Wood. This area typically attracts surfers looking for variety and is known to get quite crowded, especially on good days. There’s a campground nearby and parking is available at the state car park for a fee.
The surf at Ventura Overhead kicks in primarily with big winter swells, usually coming from the west but can also handle south and north-west swells. When conditions are right, surfers can expect a heavy, jacking take-off that favors right-handers, though you can find some lefts as well. The break can handle swell sizes around 3 feet (about 0.9 meters) and typically delivers a good, short wall before backing off. On the inside, Emma Wood offers punchy and hollow peaks that break mainly right and are more favorable during the summer months. These waves suit intermediate surfers best, given the heavier nature of the outside break.
For the best experience, the preferred wind direction is north-east, and the breaks can work at all tide heights: low, mid, and high. Both breaks have a rocky and sandy bottom, so be mindful of where you're paddling out. Keep in mind that conditions can change quickly, and as with any crowded spot, patience and respect go a long way.
