Sultan's surf guide

Sultan's is a well-known surf spot located in the North Malé Atoll. It's one of the most popular places to catch waves, often crowded with around 100 surfers daily. This spot is especially accessible for those who are improving their skills or for intermediates looking for a friendly wave. Just keep in mind that the increasing popularity comes with some possible threats from local development.

The wave at Sultan's is a right-hand reef break that really shines when the swell is coming from the Southeast but can also pick up swells from the East and South. It works well across a variety of sizes, starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can handle quite a bit of power. The drop is steep and fast but manageable for intermediate surfers. You can expect a good carving wall that leads to some fun sections on the inside, extending about 300 meters down the line on bigger swells. For the best results, a southwest wind is preferable, and it works well on any tide height—low, mid, or high.

Being a reef break, the surf can get powerful, so it's important to gauge the conditions and know your limits. This spot offers some long rides, and if you can catch a good wave, it's definitely worth the wait. Just make sure you’re comfortable with your skill level before paddling out, as the crowd can be a mix of all abilities.
