Tiavea Bay surf guide
Surf: Various good quality breaks can be found in Tiavea Bay a long, slow drive through the Uafato Conservation Area. The rivermouth is popular as a rest from the hazards of coral, peaking both ways with ramped-up walls and cover-up sections at mid tides. Further east is a powerful, fickle right peak and a distant right reef holds fun walls. At the western end there is also a fast sketchy left.
Environment: Timing the tide and getting S-SW winds is the trick, along with some nice N swell from up Alaska way.
Surf: General: A beautifully lush drive through Uafato Conservation Area will land you in this equally beautiful bay on Upolu's north coast, where there are four spots. The most popular and reliable is the cobblestone rivermouth, offering fun peaks and tubes. There are a couple of righthanders (including one that has been compared to Sunset in Hawaii) and a fast, hollow and somewhat fickle left reef/point. Nothing world-class, but a nice change of pace and scenery from the famous south coast waves.
