More about Triple S Pier surfspot

One of the few remaining surfing areas at Atlantic Beach, this break will be particularly good when the swell sweeps up the coastline from the SW. Incoming tide best.

General: Running only 29 miles from Bogue Inlet to Beaufort Inlet, the Crystal Coast goes largely unnoticed next to its big barrier island brother to the north, and while the surfing action is mostly concentrated around the piers, make no mistake: the waves can crank, especially during a big south swell. Tides: Low to mid tide Size: Chest high-overhead Wind: North Swell: S, SE Bottom: Sand Paddling: Pretty mellow unless there is a big E or SE swell and the current kicks in. Spot Rating: Waves on both sides of the pier depending on the swell direction.

Novice up to the best local surfers depending on the surf.

A few paid parking lots around the area.

Storm dependent: tropical cyclones in the late summer and fall with frontal activity from late fall through winter into spring.

Crowd Factor: Can be crowded if the sand is working right. Local Vibe: Pretty mellow.

Observe ‘distance from pier’ laws, in this case 200ft (67m). Apparently, surfers invited the best fisherman to come and see how far they could cast. The longest cast was well shy of 200ft, which resulted in the pier distance restrictions being reduced from 250ft (83m). Facilities include restrooms, showers, camping, telephones, and a lifeguard in summer.

Fish guts.

Fisherfolk, cops, marine invaders.
