Uchiumi is located at the start of the 50km long Nichinan coast. It's known for its heavily striated reefs, usually referred to as the Devil's Washboard, which create some punchy waves. The spot can get pretty crowded, so expect to share the waves with other surfers. The waves here can be hit or miss, especially if you're relying on smaller wind swells since it tends to stay sheltered behind the harbor breakwall.
The surf here is mostly suited for intermediate surfers. Uchiumi breaks over an uneven reef, producing both left and right waves. The optimal swell direction is from the southeast, but it can handle swells coming from the east and south as well. Wave heights can be good when the swell is around 2ft (about 0.6 meters). It's best to surf at low, mid, or high tide, but you’ll generally find the waves are better at high tide. The waves can be hollow and fast over the shallow shelf, especially in front of the convenience store.
When it comes to wind, west winds are preferable for Uchiumi. Just be aware that the waves might not break well if the swell is too small or junky. So, if you’re planning to paddle out, check the conditions first to make the most of your session here!
