Unstad Left is a surf spot that offers a mix of challenging waves and unique conditions. It's located in an area where the sea hits a rocky shelf, creating long left-handers that can be rewarding for skilled surfers. You’ll find that the spot is best when there's a solid southwest swell rolling in. It’s not for everyone, though, so be prepared for a bit of a workout both in and out of the water.
The waves here are known to be a bit tricky. You can expect long lefts that come in when the swell is around 4 feet (about 1.2 meters) or more. The best swell direction is southwest, but southwest and western swells can also work. The break happens over an uneven reef, which adds to the challenge. When the conditions align, you'll find a mix of crumbling sections and the occasional barrel. If the wind's blowing from the southeast, it can make for a nice offshore breeze. Low to mid tide is usually preferable for the best ride. Keep in mind, this spot is really for experts only.
Access to Unstad Left might not be the easiest, and the entry and exit can be tough because of the boulders along the rocky shelf. It’s a spot that will definitely test your speed and nerve. Make sure to be aware of your surroundings and plan your sessions carefully.
