Waipio Valley surf guide

Waipio Valley is a unique surf spot located on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island, known for its stunning scenery and diverse surf opportunities. The valley cuts into a cliff-lined area, offering some relief that creates a different kind of wave environment compared to the surrounding coastline. With black sand beaches and dramatic landscapes, the valley provides a picturesque backdrop for surfers looking to enjoy a session.

This spot generally works best with swells from the NorthEast and NorthWest, handling sizes starting from around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters). The waves break over sand, presenting both left and right beach breaks that can cater to various skill levels. It’s a good place for beginners to get their feet wet while still being fun enough for more experienced surfers. The best time to surf here is when the wind blows from the South, especially during low to mid tides.

Accessing Waipio Valley can be a bit of a challenge, as the road is mostly suitable for 4WD vehicles or involves a long hike. There are also a few other beaches in the vicinity, like Waimanu, Honopue, and Honokane, that require a hike-in but offer adventurous surf options. If you're heading back toward Kohala Lighthouse, consider stopping by Keokea Beach Park as another potential surf spot.
