Surf: General: Directly south of Carolina Beach is Kure Beach, where surfers generally focus on the pier or any of a number of beach accesses, like Alabama Avenue, which sits right at the border between the two towns. Fun waves peel off the outflow pipe on the right swell and the crowd is typically a bit more mellow than some of the nearby, more popular spots. Tides: Low to mid tide Size: Chest high-overhead Wind: West Swell: S, SE Bottom: Sand Paddling: Normally not bad but south swells can sometimes have some current to contend with. Spot Rating: Not the best quality but some options on the right swells. Access: Great. Lots of free parking. Crowds: Crowd Factor: Pretty mellow. Local Vibe: Pretty mellow. Environment: Normally OK but with enough rain or a hurricane it can get pretty bad. Hazards: Cape Fear River water. Season: Storm dependent: tropical cyclones in the late summer and fall with frontal activity from late fall through winter into spring.
