Fort Fisher is a surf spot located in North Carolina known for its access and relatively user-friendly waves. The beach has several parking lots nearby, making it convenient for surfers. While the spot can attract crowds when conditions are favorable, it’s not overly packed, so there’s some room to enjoy the waves. The environment is generally okay, but heavy rain or storms can change that. Watch out for rocks in the lineup, as they can be hazards when you're surfing.
The surf at Fort Fisher is primarily a beach break, with waves that can be both lefts and rights. It works best with a northeast swell, ideally ranging from about 1.2 to 2.1 meters (4 to 7 feet). Low to mid tide is typically the best time to hit the water, and chest-high to overhead waves are common. The best wind direction is from the west, helping to shape the waves nicely. Even though it's not the point break it once was, there are still decent days to be had when the conditions line up. Beginners and intermediates should find it manageable, while the more experienced surfers can have some fun too.
As for the season, expect the best surf during autumn, especially with tropical cyclones in late summer and fall, plus some frontal activity through winter and spring. It’s not the stellar spot it used to be, but if you catch it right, you can still have some enjoyable sessions here. Whether you’re on a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, SUP, or bodyboard, there’s something for everyone on a good day.
