Overview
Amoreira is an exposed beach and rivermouth break, with a headland to the south and a mix of sand and sand-covered reef. It is a fickle spot, but on the right day it can be excellent, with lefts in the rivermouth peeling toward the middle of the bay and rights toward the northern end.
When It Works
It picks up plenty of swell and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. The preferred swell is southwest, with southwest to north swell directions also in play. It is best from September to May, across autumn, winter, and spring.
The banks can shift around because of the currents, so conditions can be inconsistent. It is usually better when small and clean.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind is east, with southeast also a useful wind direction. The spot is wind exposed, so clean conditions matter.
It can work on all tides, though low to mid tide is listed for the spot and a rising tide is better. Rights are more favoured at lower stages of the tide.
Local Tips
Amoreira is generally fairly quiet and rarely crowded, with a chilled but somewhat reserved feel in the lineup. It suits intermediate surfers and can be ridden on shortboards, longboards, fish, and bodyboards.
Currents and rips can be strong, and paddling can be heavy. The water can be polluted after rain.
Access
There is a car park at the northern end, with free parking and roadside parking available. Showers and a lifeguard are listed facilities.
