Anchor Point surf guide

Anchor Point is Morocco's most famous surf spot, located in the popular town of Taghazout. This legendary right point break runs along a rocky shelf and is known for its consistent waves, especially during the winter months when the North Atlantic's storm track kicks in. It's pretty accessible but can get super crowded, especially when the swells are smaller. With at least four other world-class breaks within driving distance, there are definitely options around, but Anchor Point often draws the biggest crowds.

The wave here really shines when you have a medium to large northwest (NW) swell coming in. It can handle swell sizes from about 4ft (1.2m) all the way up to 16ft (4.9m) and works best at low tide. The wave starts with a steep take-off followed by fast sections that allow for plenty of high-performance maneuvers. It has some hollow sections and can even offer a few emerald green barrels on the sandy areas down the point. The paddle out can be quite the workout, especially on bigger days when there's a lot of whitewash crashing over the rocks, so timing and luck are key to getting back in safely. On really big days, you’ll want to time your jump off the rocks carefully, as it can be pretty gnarly.

For those looking to ride Anchor Point, it's good to know that it'll work best with northeast winds and allows for varying board types like shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish. While experienced surfers thrive here, intermediates may want to play it safe or drift down to some of the milder town breaks like Hash Point when the waves get larger. Overall, if you're ready for a world-class experience and are good with the crowds, Anchor Point is a must-visit.
