Arroyo Laguna is a surf spot that’s more known for windsurfing, but it can occasionally serve up some decent waves for surfers. This beach offers a mix of sand and boulders along its shoreline, creating a unique environment for riding. When you arrive, you’ll find a dirt parking lot on the west side of Highway 1, right in front of a cattle gate. Just be cautious of the large elephant seals that often relax on the beach.
This spot works best with southwest swells and can handle sizes around 2ft (about 0.6 meters). The waves here generally break both left and right, though they can be fast and hollow, especially on a good day. The day-to-day conditions can vary widely; you might find it often closed out but sometimes it treats you to a hollow right at low tide near the rock outcropping at the south end. The mid tide is usually the sweet spot, and you’ll want the wind coming from the northeast for better conditions.
Keep an eye out for the creek marker along the highway to make sure you don’t miss the turnoff. The atmosphere here is laid-back, but always be aware of the local wildlife lounging about. Make the most out of your session at Arroyo Laguna by timing it right with the swells and tides!
