Black Point Beach, located in the Sea Ranch area, is a beachbreak that's part of a 10-mile-long, 5,200-acre subdivision. This spot offers surfers a chance to enjoy some waves while taking in the beautiful coastal scenery. Accessing the beach is straightforward; just pay a $3 fee in the parking lot at Highway 1 milepost 50.8 and take a leisurely quarter-mile walk west to the surf.
The surf at Black Point is pretty fickle, but it can be rewarding when conditions line up. It's better during the winter months when smaller northwestern swells roll in. The waves can range from waist-high to overhead (about 0.9 to 2.4 meters) and break over sandy bottoms. When you’re out there, you might catch both lefts and rights, making it versatile for your ability level. It's suitable for beginners and intermediates, especially when the swell is around 3 to 8 feet (roughly 0.9 to 2.4 meters). Best conditions are found with southeast winds, and it works well at low to mid-high tides. Getting out can be a bit challenging at times because the waves can get hollow, so be prepared.
The crowd factor is low, so you’ll often find yourself with plenty of space to enjoy the waves. It’s a clean environment, and there aren’t really any major hazards to worry about. Whether you’re on a shortboard, funboard, or fish, you’ll find that Black Point Beach offers a decent session, especially if other nearby spots aren’t holding up well.
