Blue Duck Stream surf guide

Blue Duck Stream is a surf spot located just north of Mangamaunu, near Kaikoura. It's an accessible beach break that offers a decent option for surfers looking to ride some waves. To get there, you’ll drive north on State Highway 1 from Kaikoura for about 20 minutes. Once you pass Mangamaunu, turn left onto Blue Duck Valley Road to park. You’ll need to cross the railway tracks to reach the beach.

The surf here can be a bit hit or miss. The waves typically break over sand and can work well with a southeast swell. You can expect the spot to handle swell sizes of around 2 feet (0.6 meters), and you might find waves breaking to the left and the right. It's best to surf during low to mid tide, but you can catch a few during high tide as well. The wind from the west usually creates the best conditions. Keep in mind, when the tide is high, the waves tend to be a bit fat, which might not be ideal for everyone.

This spot is pretty beginner-friendly, so it's a good place for newer surfers to practice. Given its proximity to Kaikoura, it’s a convenient option for a surf session if you’re in the area. Just remember to check the conditions before heading out to make the most of your time in the water!
