Boca Barranca surf guide

Boca Barranca is a well-known surf spot located in Costa Rica, conveniently close to San Jose. This long left-hand point break is popular among surfers and offers the chance for extended rides, making it one of the favorite spots in the region. It's easy to access, especially since it's near a major bridge that connects different parts of the country. However, because it's a popular spot, don't be surprised if the lineup is busy when conditions are good.

The waves here are best on a S-SW swell and can handle sizes from about 3 to 8 feet (approximately 1 to 2.5 meters). On the right day, you can score long rides of around 800 yards (about 730 meters), especially during low to mid tides. The bottom is made up of a mix of flat rocks and sand, and the waves tend to break nicely as a river mouth wave, coming in mainly left. Ideal wind conditions are from the east, making it a solid spot for different levels of surfers, but it really caters to intermediate abilities and works well for shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish.

While you will find plenty of longboarders enjoying the mellow sections, it's important to be aware that the crowd factor tends to rise when the surf is good. Boca Barranca is also popular for competitions, so expect a bit of a local vibe as you navigate the waves. Plan your visit during the summer season for the best conditions.
