Boscombe is located just a short walk east of the Bournemouth Pier and is known for its unique setup. It’s a popular spot among local surfers and visitors alike. The sandbanks around Boscombe Pier can produce some average waves, but you might catch a decent session if the right swell hits. Overall, it’s a mixed bag, with some good days balanced out by the more everyday conditions.
The spot picks up more swell than Bournemouth, especially when it comes to southwest (SW) groundswells. The waves here can range from about 0.6 meters (2 feet) to 2.4 meters (8 feet), making it suitable for surfers of all skill levels, from beginners to more experienced surfers. You can expect left and right-breaking waves, depending on the conditions. The best time to surf is during an incoming tide, whether it's low, mid, or high, ideally when the wind is blowing from the north (N). While the banks are somewhat less reliable than other spots, it can still deliver solid surf on occasion, especially when a big low-pressure system is around.
Access to the beach can be a bit limited, with parking available mainly in the Overstrand car park. During the peak surf season from September to February, Boscombe tends to get quite busy, so be prepared for some competition out on the water. It's important to respect the local vibe, which is mostly relaxed but with a competitive edge. Make sure to wait your turn in the tight take-off area. The bottom is primarily sand, which suits various board types, including shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and even bodyboards.
