Bowes River, located near Northampton, is one of those spots where you can kick back, camp for a few days, and enjoy some decent waves. The area has a mix of red and yellow sandstone bluffs meeting the Indian Ocean. This makes access a bit tricky at times, but once you’re out there, it’s not too bad. The scenery is nice, and you'll find the vibe pretty relaxed.
When it comes to surfing, Bowes River can be a solid choice. The waves here mostly break over a mix of uneven reef and sand, which helps keep things interesting. The optimal swell direction for the best surf is SouthWest, while it can handle swells coming from the South and West, typically in the range of about 2 to 6.5 feet (0.6 to 2 meters). You can catch both left and right waves, making it a fun spot for intermediate surfers. The best winds come from the NorthEast, and you can ride the waves at any tide level—low, mid, or high.
If you’re up for some exploring, consider a guided 4WD tour around the area. There could be some hidden gems nearby perfect for scoring waves when Bowes River isn’t firing. Just keep in mind that the fringing reef can be a little sharky, so it's good to be aware while you’re out there enjoying the surf.
