Bude Summerleaze is a popular surf spot located at the mouth of the river Bude. It features a large stretch of golden sand, making it a great place to chill when you’re not catching waves. The beach is pretty straightforward to access, with a car park located close by on the north side of the river. During summer, it tends to get pretty busy, but that’s just part of the vibe here. The spot has a mix of surf conditions that can cater to different skill levels, so it can be enjoyable for both beginners and more experienced surfers.
The surf at Summerleaze can handle swells from about 2ft (0.6m) to 6ft (1.8m) and usually breaks over both sand and some rock. You can catch both left and right waves here, with the left often being better at low tide and a fun right near the seawater swimming pool when the tide is higher. The wind tends to be best from the East or East-Northeast, and it picks up some decent swell from the West to West-Southwest. When the conditions align just right, you might find some quality waves, especially between low to mid-tide. Be ready to paddle hard in bigger swells, though.
While the surf can be consistent, the spot can also be affected by rip currents, especially when the swell picks up, so always keep an eye out. The local vibe is fairly relaxed, and you'll find a mix of surfers using shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and even bodyboards here. If you’re looking for the best time to surf, autumn from September to November is often the golden period with better conditions.
