Campelo is a surf spot known for its challenging waves and can get pretty crowded, especially during the summer months. It's a beach break that generally holds up well, so you can expect rides here to be both fun and demanding. It's located in an area where you'll find parking can be a hassle when things are busy, so plan accordingly if you're heading out.
The surf at Campelo is best for expert surfers, with waves that handle swell sizes up to around 3 feet (about 0.9 meters). The optimal swell direction is from the Northwest, but it can also work with swell coming from the West and North. The waves break over sand, offering both left and right rides. For the best experience, aim for low to mid tides, and a Southeast wind is preferred. You’ll find some regular barrel sections, and while it can be consistent—even on smaller swells—be prepared for a bit of a workout out there.
When you're out surfing at Campelo, just keep an eye out for rips, as they can be tricky, and some localism can happen during peak times. It’s a good idea to be aware of your surroundings, especially if it’s crowded. Lifeguards are on duty, and there are shower facilities to rinse off after your session.
