Carate surf guide

Carate is a surf spot located just before the entrance to Corcovado National Park. It’s a nice alternative if the waves are flat around Matapalo. The beach picks up swells from the south and west, which makes it worth checking when other spots are struggling. It's not always epic, but it offers some rideable waves when you need to surf.

You can expect the waves at Carate to break over sand, with options to surf left or right. It handles swell sizes from about 2 ft (0.6 m) and is best with swells coming from the SouthWest direction. The wind is usually best from the NorthEast, making for decent conditions. The waves are suitable for beginners, making it a good spot to practice and enjoy the surf. You can find workable waves during low, mid, and high tides, so there’s flexibility depending on the time of day.

The environment can be a bit rippy during groundswells, and you’ll want to keep an eye out for the river mouth, which can bring some murky water into the mix. Getting there involves a long, bumpy 4x4 track from Puerto Jimenez, so be prepared for an adventure on your way to the waves.
