Chassiron surf guide

Chassiron is located on the beautiful Île d'Oléron and is known as the island's premier surf spot. It's right in the heart of the action and is a go-to spot for many surfers looking for consistent waves. However, keep in mind that it’s not a beginner-friendly spot. The break has some challenges, including rocky sections and strong rips that can catch you off guard if you’re not careful.

The surf here mainly features peaks breaking over an uneven reef. You can expect some long walling lefts and shorter rights, especially at lower tides. This spot preferably handles swell sizes around 2ft (0.6m) and thrives with a west swell direction, but will also work with southwest and northwest swells. If you’re planning your surf sessions, aim for the low to mid tide for the best conditions. Just remember, it’s best suited for those with expert skills due to the shallow and rocky bottom.

Getting to the water involves a bit of a trek over rocks, so be ready for that. You'll want to wear booties to keep your feet safe from urchins during that long walk across the channelled fishing reef. When the wind is blowing from the southeast, conditions can be pretty good, so check the forecast before you head out!
