Chevalier is a surf spot located near Roche a Bateau. The area is relatively unimpressive at first glance, but don’t be fooled. It has its own charm and can be a reliable option on small southeast swells. The approach is straightforward: cross the river east of Roche a Bateau, park beside the grass football beach, and take a short walk through the farm to reach the surf.
The surf here mainly offers consistent lefts and rights that wedge tight to the shore, thanks to the way the bathymetry and the sandbars interact with the incoming swells. You can expect to ride waves that break over boulders and sand, making it suitable for intermediate surfers. The optimal swell direction is southeast, but it can also handle swells coming from the east or south. When it’s on, the waves can handle sizes down to about 1 ft (0.3 meters) and will give you a good session, especially around low, mid, or high tide. Just keep in mind that the preferred wind direction is northeast.
One thing to watch out for is the river sediment that can sting your eyes while you’re out there. It's a unique aspect of Chevalier that can catch you off guard, so just be prepared! This spot works best with those southeast pulses and can be a fun alternative when the more popular spots are crowded.
