Church is the southernmost surf spot in the Trestles area. It's a mix of sand and cobblestones, thanks to the nearby rivermouth. This spot is pretty reliable for surf year-round but works best with a southwest swell, especially during medium to high tides. Surfers can expect long, lined-up rights with some nice hollow sections when conditions are good.
The waves here can range from shoulder high (about 1.5 meters) to double overhead (about 3 meters), making it suitable for various skill levels, from beginners to experts. On a solid southwest swell, the paddle back can get pretty long, so be prepared for that. The preferred wind direction is northeast, which helps keep the waves clean. Church offers multiple take-off zones when the south swells are rolling in, and it breaks over boulders and sand, providing a nice variety in the lineup.
Accessing Church is straightforward. You can park near San Onofre and then walk north or hike down from Trestles. The crowd situation can get a bit packed but is generally less intense than Lowers. The local vibe tends to be cordial, making it a chill spot to catch some waves. With the best conditions often found from November to February, Church can be a solid choice any time of the year.
