Trestles - Uppers is a well-known surf spot located in Southern California, part of the San Onofre State Park. It's famous among surfers for its quality waves and beautiful scenery. Accessing Uppers is easy; you can park at or near the Carl’s Jr. restaurant on El Camino and then take a paved foot path into the area. This spot is generally less crowded than its neighbor, Lower Trestles, making it a great option for those looking to catch some waves without the massive crowds.
When it comes to surfing at Uppers, it features rippable cobblestone right-handers that are often hollow and offer rewarding rides. The optimal swell direction is Southwest, with the spot able to handle swells ranging from 5ft to 10ft (1.5m to 3m). The best time to surf here is during medium-low to medium-high tides, especially with swells coming from the South, Southwest, West, and WNW. The paddle back can be tiring as you'll need to jockey for position after riding a wave that can stretch up to 150 yards. While rights are the main attraction, it is possible to get a short left when the river is flowing. The wind is best from the Northeast, making those clean, fun sessions even better.
Uppers is most consistent from March to October, but it can deliver good waves year-round with solid W or WNW swells. The surf here is generally suited for intermediate surfers, but those with shortboards, funboards, fish, or longboards will find it enjoyable. Just be mindful of the crowd factor, as it can get pretty packed, and expect an eager lineup. So gear up and have fun, but be ready to hustle for your waves!
