Cova Do Vapor surf guide

Cova Do Vapor is a small sandy alcove located near the mouth of the Tagus River, just south of Lisbon. It’s bordered by two rocky groynes, offering a unique view of the city across the water. The area can get busy, especially during the winter months from December to February, when surfers and bodyboarders flock here to catch some waves. The beach has a small car park right at the front, but there's also additional parking a bit further back.

When the swell hits, which can be from the Northwest to Southwest, Cova Do Vapor can produce some pretty punchy waves. They typically range in size from about 2ft (0.6m) to 7ft (2.1m) and can reach waist to double overhead under the right conditions. The waves break over sand and are known for being hollow and heavy, with peaks that can get quite chunky, making it ideal for intermediate to expert surfers. The right side breaks off the northern groyne while there’s a left wave to the south. Wind from the East is preferable, and the best time to surf is usually around low to mid tide. Be prepared for strong currents, especially from the river, which can create challenging paddling conditions.

This spot is particularly popular with a loyal bodyboarding crew, especially when the bigger swells are rolling in. With its short, wedgy waves, Cova Do Vapor can awaken during those prime swell conditions to provide an adrenaline rush for those willing to take it on. However, the local vibe is very much dominated by the regulars, so expect a tight community feel while you're out in the water.
