Crab Island surf guide
Surf: General: In the 20th century, this was the heaviest wave around. Breaks off a small offshore island just off the harbour in (super touristy) Doolin Village. Packs a punch.
Tides: Low to mid
Size: Head high to triple overhead.
Wind: E-SE
Swell: SW/ NW
Bottom: Rock reef.
Paddling: Don't forget shoulder day beforehand; it is further than it looks.
Spot Rating: A high performance, powerful right.
Access: Park at the harbour and paddle from the rocks.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: This is a regular with locals and a fairly tight takeoff spot. Crowds are a factor.
Local Vibe: It’s a staple for locals and they're going to get their waves when it's busy. Smiles and strategy required when it's good and sunny. Often overlooked when it’s a little bigger because of the paddling.
Environment: Very clean.
Hazards: Very sharp limestone reef. Can get shallow. It’s a long way back to the harbour if you get hurt or lose your board.
Season: Will break all year round. Does not handle wind well so mid winter spotty.
