First Beach surf guide
Surf: On the other hand, First Beach, sometimes referred to as Wizard Beach, is a basic beachbreak with patches of reef, whose main attribute is to pick up more swell than any other spot. Can get suckier and dumpier on a bigger, longer period swell and there is often a left at the north end. Can also be quite rippy through the channels between the scattered reefs. Same story around the corner at Red Frog Beach, but less quality and crowd. There is more messy wind-exposed beach and reef on Bastimentos out to Punta Vieja and the Zapatillas Keys, 2 islands located on a coral platform. The rest of the archipelago is open to exploration if you can find a boat driver willing to venture across the strong currents flowing between the open sea and the lagoon of Chiriqui. Cayo de Agua’s NE shore could be a better bet with a series of points (Nispero & Tiburon) surrounded by coral. The Valiente Peninsula principally attracts biologists and geologists, but a wave search along its coast should be rewarding. The area has great swell exposure and points are plentiful.
Environment: Accessed via boat to the south side of the island, leaving a good 20min walk across fields, more when the trail gets muddy. It's definitely not the best surf around but will be the only option if it's flat everywhere else, and the beauty of the beach makes up for the poor quality of the surf.
