First Beach, also known as Wizard Beach, is a basic beachbreak scattered with patches of reef. Its main draw is swell exposure: it picks up more swell than anywhere else around, so it often has something to ride when the rest of the area is flat. The surf here is modest, but the beauty of the beach more than makes up for it.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northwest through north to east (NW-N-E), and it comes into its own on a northeast (NE) swell. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft, breaking both left and right, with a left often peeling off the north end. Waves reel over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and the break is consistent. On bigger, longer-period swells it can turn suckier and dumpier, and the channels between the scattered reefs can get rippy.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly wave. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works.
Access
Getting here means a boat to the south side of the island, then a solid 20-minute walk across the fields, longer once the trail turns muddy. There's camping at the beach, and parking is restricted.
