Josiah's Bay is a little nook on the extreme north-facing coast of Tortola. It features a wide sand beach with A-frame peaks lining its length. While the waves here tend to be slopey and often weak, it can be a solid spot for beginners to learn and can surprise you with some fun rides when conditions align. If the sand, tide, and wind all come together, Josiah's Bay can deliver some beachbreak barrels. The spot is tucked away, so it usually gets more cows than sunbathers.
When it comes to surfing, Josiah's Bay handles swell sizes from about 2ft to 6ft (0.6m to 1.8m) with an optimal swell direction coming from the north. The waves can break both left and right over a sandy bottom, making it pretty mellow for those just starting out. The best time to surf is generally during autumn and winter, especially when the tropical cyclones deliver some consistent swells. For wind, northeast directions work best, and the mid to high tides are preferred for catching decent waves. While it can get crowded with beginners and surf schools, it's a good spot for longboarding or funboarding.
The local scene isn't too intense, and you might run into a few experienced surfers willing to share tips. Besides Josiah's Bay, there's Lambert Bay to the east and Cootens to the west, offering some alternative surf options. If you're keen to explore more, there are powerful beach breaks and some tricky reef spots around the island, but those will require a bit of effort to find, like making friends with the local surfing community or boating along the coast.
