Kalamath Rivermouth is a surf spot located at the mouth of California's second largest river, the Klamath. The area has a unique vibe and is known for its natural beauty. It's not exactly a world-class destination, but it has its quirks. The setting is quite important, as you’ll find a mix of river and ocean topography, making it an interesting place for those who like to explore different breaks.
The surf here is primarily a right-hand rivermouth break that can deliver some powerful barrels, especially during clean swells that hit around chest high to a few feet overhead (approximately 1 to 2.5 meters). It works best with a northwest swell direction and can handle swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters). The best conditions tend to occur on low to mid to high tides, with east winds preferred for cleaner waves. Just keep in mind that the currents can be quite strong, so this spot is definitely more suited for experienced surfers.
Another thing to note is the wildlife. With a huge pinniped rookery nearby, you’ll share the waters with plenty of sea life. While this can make for an interesting surf session, it also means more chances of encountering a shark, especially during the autumn salmon runs when the waters are a bit more active. Summer is generally when the waves are most ridable, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn't be cautious out there.
