L’Ermitage is a popular surf spot located south of the Loire estuary. It's known for its beachbreaks and usually offers better conditions than the nearby Les Rochelets when the swell is pushing. The wide sandy beach provides plenty of space, making it a great place for surfers and kiters to enjoy the waves.
The surf here works best with a west swell direction, but you can also catch decent waves with swells coming from the southwest or northwest. It handles swell sizes starting from around 1 ft (0.3 m) and generally produces beach breaks with both left and right waves. The best wind direction for L’Ermitage is from the north, which helps create cleaner conditions. Surfers can enjoy riding waves during low, mid, and high tide, making it accessible at various times throughout the day. This spot is beginner-friendly, so it's a nice place for those just starting out.
The open sands and consistent winds make L’Ermitage a favored location for kiters when the cross or onshore winds are blowing. Just keep an eye on the currents, as they can be strong at times, and be aware of the local crowd, especially on good days.
