Las Islitas is a surf spot located in Matanchen Bay, known for its long rides and mellow vibe. This spot has gained some fame, with the Guinness Book of Records once certifying it as the site of the longest wave in the world, extending 5,700ft (2250m). However, in recent years, new developments in the area have impacted its consistency, making it a rare treat for surfers looking for a good session.
The best conditions at Las Islitas come with a strong South swell, although it can handle swells coming from the Northwest too. When it’s on, the waves break over uneven reefs and sandy bottoms, offering point breaks that roll right. This spot is better suited for long boards, especially when the swell size is around 2ft (0.6m) or so. For the best experience, aim for low tide and check for the preferable NorthEast winds to help shape up the waves. It's worth noting that during the peak season, waiting for that perfect wave can take a while.
While Las Islitas may not always deliver the same excitement it had back in the '60s and '70s, it's still a fun spot with a laid-back atmosphere. There are peaks around the bay suitable for various wind directions, which can make for a solid surfing experience if you time it right. If you catch it during the right conditions, enjoy the mix of cover-ups and cutbacks as the wall flexes through its long ride.
