Leo Carrillo State Beach/Secos/Arroyo Sequit is a well-known surf spot located just half a mile south of the county line, right off PCH in a scenic cove. This spot features a unique righthand wave that attracts surfers and windsurfers alike. The area can get really crowded, especially during the peak season from March to October, with surfers of all skill levels hitting the water. The stunning surrounding environment has also made it a favorite for filming various beach scenes over the years.
The surf here is mainly a fun righthander that works best at medium tides, particularly with south and southwest swells. The wave size can range from about waist high (1 meter) to double overhead (3 meters), making it suitable for intermediate and expert surfers. The take-off zone is quite limited, so it’s important to be mindful of the crowd. When conditions align, the wave breaks beautifully over cobblestones, but on bigger swells, it can also set up like a point break thanks to some rock reefs outside that hold the heavier swells. Paddling out isn’t usually too tough, but expect some duck diving when the surf picks up. The best wind direction is from the north, which keeps things clean.
Accessing Leo Carrillo is straightforward, just look for the signs along PCH. Keep in mind that the crowd factor can lead to a bit of competitiveness in the water, especially with some longboarders and errant wind surfers around. After rain, the water quality often takes a hit, so it’s good to check conditions if you've had recent storms. If you're planning to paddle out here, a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or kiteboard are all suitable options depending on your style.
