Point Dume is a well-known surf spot located in Malibu, California. It's set against a backdrop of stunning coastal scenery, and while accessing the waves can be a bit tricky, it attracts surfers who are willing to put in the effort. The closest parking is at Point Dume State Beach, and to reach the surf area, you’ll need to hike about 20 minutes south along the beach. Once you get there, you’ll find a tight-knit group of locals who frequent this spot, which can sometimes feel exclusive due to the private property nearby.
This spot offers a right-hand point break that works best on swells coming from the south, southwest, and west. It can handle swell sizes from around 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 12 feet (3.7 meters) and is generally good for intermediate to expert surfers. The bottom is made up of both rock and sand, which can give you a solid base but be aware of the rocks and urchins. For the best conditions, the preferred wind directions are from the northwest to northeast, and it works with any tide, but low to mid-tide is usually more favorable for a cleaner ride.
Crowds can be an issue when the waves are firing, so expect a busy lineup on those days. The local vibe can be friendly, but it’s best to respect the small crew that surfs here regularly. Summer and autumn are the prime seasons for swells, so plan your sessions accordingly. If you're not careful, the current can be strong, especially during a proper groundswell, so keep that in mind when paddling out.
