County Line/Yerba Buena Beach is a popular surf spot located just north of the Ventura/L.A. county line. It’s known for its scenic views and two distinct surfable areas. The beach has a more undeveloped feel compared to urban surf spots to the south, making it a good getaway for surfers looking for a change of pace. Parking is convenient along Highway 1 near its junction with Yerba Buena Road, right in front of Neptune's Net.
The surf here can be pretty varied, so it’s good to know what you’re getting into. The northern end features a kelpy point with a cobblestone right that generally offers the best waves, especially on medium tides with southwest or west swells. Sizes can range from about waist-high (1 meter) to double overhead (3 meters), so it can get serious. The beachbreak to the south provides different peaks and can get hollow and punchy, particularly at high tide, making it popular with shortboarders. You'll find both lefts and rights, so there's something for everyone, including beginners, intermediates, and experts. A northeast wind is preferable for decent conditions.
Even though it’s a beautiful spot, be prepared for some crowds, especially since it’s close to the Valley. Most of the time, though, you can still find waves if you know where to look. This spot works throughout the year but is often best in fall. Watch for variable swell directions—southwest, south, and northwest all come into play. Whether you’re riding a shortboard, fish, funboard, or longboard, County Line/Yerba Buena Beach has opportunities for various board types. Just remember, it can be chilly out there, so dress accordingly!
