Los Pinos is a surf spot located on the northern coast of the cape in Mazatlan, specifically in El Centro. It’s known for being fairly consistent, especially during the summer months. The waves are shaped by south to southwest swells, which often create left-hand breaks. The setup includes a shallow rock reef that leads into a small bay bordered by a wide, pink-sand beach. While the waves are decent, keep in mind that they can get a bit soft when it's larger, but that usually means fewer surfers in the water.
This spot is best with swells coming from the south, south-southeast, and southwest, typically ranging from about 5 ft to 10 ft (1.5 to 3 meters). When it’s pumping, you can expect clean lefts that give you enough of a face to hit the lip and pick up some speed. The ideal conditions are during mid to high tide, and the wind from the east or southeast helps clean up the waves. Paddling can be challenging when the surf is big, as you’ll be duck-diving a lot, so make sure you're comfortable with that.
Access is easy; just park off Paseo Claussen. The crowd can vary depending on the swell, but it's worth noting that the take-off zone is tight, so be ready to share the waves. This spot is suitable for intermediate to expert surfers, especially those riding shortboards. It works best in the spring, summer, and autumn, so plan your visit accordingly. As always, watch out for the shallow rocks and enjoy the ride!
