Makapu’u surf guide

Makapu’u Beach is a popular spot located on the southeastern coast of Oahu, Hawaii. It's known for its beautiful scenery and fun waves, making it a great place for surfers, bodysurfers, and bodyboarders. The beach has good access with ample parking, which makes it easy for visitors to enjoy the waves and the views. However, it can get crowded, especially during the high season.

The surf at Makapu’u works best with north-east swells and can handle wave sizes around 2ft (0.6 meters) and above. You’ll find both left and right waves, but the left wave often gets more attention due to its fun rides that can lead to some hefty barrels. The waves break over an uneven reef and sand, which can make for some interesting rides. It's also important to know that the best sessions typically occur during low to mid tide, and winds from the south-west are preferred to keep the waves clean. Beginners can find some fun rides here, but they should stay aware of the strong currents that can be present, especially when it gets bigger.

While surfing at Makapu’u, many surfers also like to check out Rabbit Island when the north-east swells get larger. It's a great spot for those wanting to explore nearby areas and catch some different types of waves. Just keep in mind that it's a no surfboards policy at the beach park itself, but stand-up paddleboards are allowed at Makapu’u Point, where you can catch some heavy barrels. Overall, it’s a mixed bag of surf experiences depending on the conditions, but it’s definitely worth a visit for anyone looking to ride some waves.
